City Park Facts: Largest federal parks inside the largest cities

Continuing our largest parks series, here’s the top ten largest federal parks located inside our 100 largest US cities

  1. Chugach National Forest, Anchorage: 245,653 acres
  2. Lake George Natural Landmark, Anchorage: 192,192
  3. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Chesapeake: 50,469
  4. Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, Jacksonville: 31,486
  5. Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, New Orleans: 25,361
  6. Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia Beach: 9,180
  7. Gateway National Recreation Area, New York: 7,683
  8. Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, San Jose: 6,800
  9. Petroglyph National Monument, Albuquerque: 5,164
  10. Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles: 3,696

  1. Could you run a list of the 10 largest National Park Service managed parks in urban areas? On this list, only Timucuan, Gateway and Petroglyph would qualify, and each of them is kind of on the periphery of the urban area. Other than in DC, where does the NPS manage significant parks within cities? Thanks d

  2. We can get more detailed in a week or so (we’re rolling out City Park Facts over the next few days) but included in the City Park Facts report is acreage by agency by city, so here’s the top 10 cities by NPS acreage (inside the city limits) overall:

    1. Anchorage: 192,192
    2. Jacksonville: 8,400
    3. New York City: 7,726
    4. Washington, DC: 6,852
    5. Albuquerque: 5,164
    6. San Antonio: 990
    7. San Francisco: 863
    8. Arlington (VA) 760
    9. Greensboro: 250
    10. Atlanta: 164
