Cities in Recession

The New York Times gives an overview of cities that are either in recession or on the brink and those that are growing (mostly found in areas with economies centered around energy). We’ve seen proposed or enacted budget cuts for parks and recreation in many cities, including Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City, Indianapolis and Oakland, to name only a few.

In such times, parks and recreation find it hard to compete against other essential services such as police and fire. We’ve heard it before, but the bottom line is that parks are also essential to cities. By cutting maintenance and programs, cities may lose out rather than save money. Making the case can be tough, and sometimes cuts are unavoidable. But there is value in educating politicians and the public on the important of on-going maintenance. Here’s an overview of New Yorkers for Parks effort on the awareness end, prepared by City Parks Alliance.
